Objectives
Explore the sound and emotional expression of Cantonese words with different rules and vocabularies
Outcome
Begin to be aware of the sound characteristics and the variation of Cantonese

Sounds from our culture

The instructor guides the participants to suggest typical Cantonese expressions which they can think of

La, he, a, pei, yi, wei, wu, wa, e, ne, luo, zhe, che, gua……

Write them down on the whiteboard

Each participant selects one of the expressions from the whiteboard

First round
Test making the sound of the chosen word in a light and short way

Second round
Add emotion
Surprised
tender
doubt
sorrow
anger……

Each participant chooses the sound they want to make
The level of the tone
The duration of the pause between each breath
And when to start making the sound

Concentrate
Then start
Take a deep breath
Make the sound according to their choice of principles
Repeat until the tutor says stop

The instructor controls the duration of each session
Give a few tries with different combination of rules and vocabularies
Let the participants experience
The phonological changes and characteristics of Cantonese

To end the session
The instructor guides the participants to discuss and summarise their experience
