Danny Yung Talk Series – Creative Elements 5: The Symbol
The theatre is an abstract world most of the time. Different tools and means can be used to develop and express concepts. What does the props that an actor holds in his hand represent? What is illustrated by the direction an actor faces and by the posture while he stands on the stage? These are all signs and symbols. The directors choose not to employ direct ways to deliver straightforward messages such as “your mum is a woman”. Instead, they work to stimulate the audience to think and to discuss.
Danny Yung has invited artists of different media to participate in a theatrical experiment in which a table and two chairs are used as symbols in an attempt to develop a bigger space for dialectical discourse. In this last lesson, he will give us details of this experiment.
