Table or any surface where each participant has enough space to make sound
Chairs (for instructor and all participants to sit on)

Objectives

To let the participants explore the possibilities of sound and rhythm through simple percussion
Explore sound with different rules and vocabularies
From an individual to a collective
To be aware of sound

Outcome

Begin to be aware of the sound characteristics and the variation of simple percussion
Begin to be aware of the others and able to interact with others with sound

Listen and resonate

Participants sit or stand around the tables
Tap on the table top with hand with the rhythm set by the instructor
During the exercise
Participants should not communicate using
Language
Facial expression
Body language

Just be a listener

First round
Participants can decide when to pause and rejoin
The first tap on table top when rejoining should be emphasised by adding strength significantly
Keep on until the instructor says stop

Second round
Participants can decide when to pause and rejoin
The tap on table top before taking pause should be emphasised by adding strength significantly
Keep on until the instructor says stop

Third round
Tap once on table top occasionally on one’s choice
Keep the rhythm unchanged
Keep on until the instructor says stop

Fourth round
The rhythm is set to ¾
Tap once on table top occasionally on one’s choice
Keep the rhythm unchanged
Keep on until the instructor says stop

Fifth round
Tap once on table top occasionally on one’s choice
Free rhythm
Keep on until the instructor stops

The instructor guides the participants to discuss and summarise their experience

Do you prefer to “listen” or to “speak”? Understanding the things we hear through our ears can enhance our abilities to express what we want other people to know through language or sounds. Designing, constructing and managing the natural and man-made sounds are fun experiments in the theatre. Using previous experiments and illustrative examples, Danny Yung will lead you to explore and learn about the possibilities associated with sounds.
